Travel photographer of the year - results

I have just spent a bit of time checking out the winners of the Travel Photographer of the year competition. I unfortunately didn't even make the shortlist for this particular competition, but seeing the winning entries I can at least identify a few obvious reasons why very quickly.

A couple of things I have noticed.

- The new talent category which I entered, was won by a 'semi-pro' photographer, someone experienced who has a masters in photography, and who had some very emotive photos of the orphans in Romania. OK, I can accept that, although I would personally like to see a new talent go to an amateur or student...I'm not even sure what the difference between pro and semi-pro is...??

The 'semi-pro' part aside, this and the majority of other winners were strong people photographs. They all told a story and landscape by itself does not do this. There were in fact very few landscapes, even in the natural wonders category where wildlife featured strongly instead. It is an interesting learning in regards to targetting and finding a category where I feel comfortable. What suits me best..and how do I keep improving my skills, do I go general or hone in. Bit confused on all of this at the moment...

Colour and black and white both featured strongly which is great to see. So, I will have a look through the images a bit more and learn as much as I can from the winners, great to be able to see and some fantastic photos in this competition. One of the runners up in one of the categories was also a finalist in the international photographer of the year, so some big guns.

If you are interested in browsing, I think that it is well worth a look
